What is the difference between oil-based polyurethane finishes, water-based finishes, and staining?
Oil-based polyurethane is the more common choice of finishes, being around longer as well. When it is applied to the wood, the properties will give your flooring a golden, amber coloring. Drying time is usually about eight hours and has a stronger smell than its counterpart, water-based. Water-based finishes dry quicker and harder. Water-base will not color/amber your flooring and does not yellow as much with age and sun exposure. The color of your floor will look very similar to what it looks like when it has the sanding phase completed. Choice is personal preference. We used oil-based polyurethane finish on all our flooring because we like the color it adds to the wood. We have a variety of stain choices that have been approved for the use with our finishes. If you desire your own stain, we do not guarantee that the finish will adhere properly to your flooring.
